Hoerskool Hendrik Verwoerd was named as the overall winner in the Smart Young Mindz competition 2011 today out of 5,780 entries. The Grade 8 – 10 learners created a strong substance out of recycled newspaper, silicone and clay which they modelled into bricks or suggested for use in pre-cast walls. Hoerskool Pretoria Wes took second prize for their innovative material made of recycled plastic, from which they created a range of clothing and bags. Hoerskool Eldoraigne took third place for their shoes made of recycled car and bicycle tyres. |

Young Debaters Make an Impression at Constitution Hill |

The debating team from Bophelo Impilo High School in Johannesburg’s CBD walked away victorious yesterday in the annual Constitution Hill Debating Tournament 2011. The teenagers argued against the notion that land should be expropriated without compensation in order to correct past injustices and team member Nonhlanhla Masanabo was nominated as best speaker of the tournament. |

Blue IQ Governance Improves |

Latest annual report highlights delivery and compliance For the first time since its inception, Blue IQ Investment Holdings’ annual report was submitted to the Gauteng legislature with an unqualified audit from the Auditor-General. The report, which was submitted within the prescribed time period, outlines projects and initiatives that are geared to stimulate Gauteng’s economy and create jobs. According to CEO Amanda Nair, the controls in place at Blue IQ have had the desired effect, though there is still room for improvement. |

SA's Auto Policies and Gauteng Province Get Nod of Approval |

Industry says there is still a lot of work to be done South Africa's national automotive policies and Gauteng provincial government initiatives were praised as important factors in the success of the automotive industry at the Automotive Industry Conference 2011 currently taking place at Birchwood. But experts warned that this government support is not enough to sustain the growth levels required for the sustainability of the automotive industry. Higher levels of co-ordination are required, both amongst the various tiers and instruments of government and amongst car makers. |
